Wale says he no longer vents to his friends in the music industry because one of them released a song after their personal conversation.
The DMV native appeared on The Breakfast Club on Tuesday, November 18, to discuss his new album, everything is a lot. After DJ Envy asked if he had anyone in the industry he could rely on, Wale revealed that he once had a deep conversation with J. Cole about some of the issues he was going through. However, he said he stopped leaning on him and other rappers after Cole dropped "False Prophets" the day after they spoke.
"I remember I called Kendrick around that time… I was getting ready to have my child," Wale said. "I talked to Cole. That was probably the only two times I really leaned on an industry person. But the crazy thing is 'False Prophets' came out the next day."
Cole released the song in 2016. In it, he raps about another rapper he knew who wanted to win so bad and claimed no one respected him. "I know he so bitter he can't see his own blessings," Cole raps on the track. "You too blind to see you got fans, n***a/And a platform to make a classic rap song/To change a n***a's life, but you too anxious livin' life." Wale said he didn't take it personally, but believed the timing was suspicious.
"I ain't take it though, you know what I'm saying," he continued. "He said it's not really about me, but whatever... All I'm saying is I love him, that's my brother. I think I kind of halted telling any industry person anything too deep."
